Kiriban at 50,000 page views

Journal Entry: Sat Mar 16, 2013, 12:47 PM

Hi folks, I'm going to have a kiriban prize for the first US resident to give me a screen shot of their 50K page view, because this number is quite a milestone for me!  I'm sorry to say that the prize is for US residents only, since I don't have a broker to ship animal parts internationally.

The prize is a deer antler mount made from your choice of supplies that I have on hand in my shop.  I can mount deer antlers that you have already or you can pick a free small set from the extra antlers I have available.  I will send the winner photos of the wood panels, antlers, and materials available so that she/he can pick out a design for the mount.  I do have a variety of panels, leathers, fabrics, and braids.

Thanks and good luck everyone!  I normally mount these (not including antler cost) for $80-120 so you're getting a fairly valuable prize!

**********

People often ask me how I make the things in my gallery, so I put WIP photos and descriptions in my scrapbook.  Please check it out if you'd like to see how the sculptures and taxidermy are made: [link]

I understand that some people think taxidermy is cruel, but I think in light of how animals are impacted by our everyday activities (where our meat and leather comes from, how many of our products have been tested on animals, habitat loss due to development), sustainable, regulated hunting and taxidermy aren't such a big deal.  I think that we've become detached from the ways we actually impact animals, and taxidermy makes us uncomfortable because it confronts us with natural cycles of life and death and our place in those cycles.  Regulated hunting can actually benefit species as a whole and the environment, and it helps get people interested in and connected to the outdoors.

Katie Crowley
Artist | Professional | Traditional Art
United States
My name is Katie Crowley and I'm an artist and taxidermist. I'm currently 32 and live in beautiful Duluth, MN, nestled between Lake Superior and the north woods. I have a BA in Art with an emphasis in sculpture from Minnesota State University Moorhead. During a model making internship with the Smithsonian, I worked on displays in the National Museum of Natural History and other Smithsonian museums. I also craft gut strings for instruments such as violins, but my core passions are taxidermy, art, and nature photography.

In my artwork, I prefer to explore dark and dreamlike themes. I'm interested in dreams and the subconscious and how images from these relate ideas to us. I use things like animals, nature, and macabre imagery as vehicles to express those ideas. Often my work documents my psychological journeys.

In addition to creating artwork, I focus on game head and life size mammal mounts and am happy to meet your taxidermy needs in these areas. I completed game head and small mammal mounting courses at The American Institute of Taxidermy. I'm also a member of the Minnesota Taxidermy Guild. For me, taxidermy is about preserving the beauty of an animal, and I'm passionate about doing that from the overall impression and personality down to the small details. Each mount is a work of art, from a simple, rustic antler mount to a complex, full body mount with habitat.

Hi there, always fun to run into another Duluthian! I just purchased a building at 1905 W Superior St (the old Kirby vacuum shop) and am starting to move things in there. Thanks!
