Wolf 3 - Winter Wolf by DiamondDustTaxidermy Wolf 3 - Winter Wolf by DiamondDustTaxidermy
Disrespectful or immature comments regarding hunting, taxidermy, or the use of real animal parts will be ignored. This wolf was legally taken in Canada where wolves are not endangered.

My third wolf mount, a pedestal on a snowy rock base. The backing is pigskin suede with a gold braid, and the base is an artificial foam rock with a dusting of artificial snow and some pine cones.

Again, I had lots of issues with this since I'm still a beginner, but it's much better than my first and second wolves. I improved on quite a few things and after this mount know what I need to work on to make the next better. This one will be used as a showroom piece. Critique is still always appreciated.

I'm excited to tackle some deep snow now and see if I can get that to look realistic. This was my first experiment with the artificial snow.

the bridge of his nose and the form is off. its either the way they put the rods in the form but it needs to be more up not down. its giving it a totaly off look. it seems to be a easy fix but it needs to be done.

other than that looks great!

its almost idenical to the wolf i mounted LOL although my eyes need to adjusted im sure its actually the same form.

Thanks! It was the McKenzie wolf pedestal form. Is that the same one you used?

I'm not quite sure what you mean about the nose. Is it the same dished look that other people have mentioned?

Definitely you are showing improvement, you are doing a good job.

Really the only thing I notice that looks off is the lips right around the nose area, I can't put my finger though on why it looks off.

It looks great! I really like the ears especially.
I could point out some things that look off, but we're still both beginners (me moreso than you) so I'll leave that to the pros. All in all though, it's lovely!

It's a shame Taxidermy doesn't get enough love in the art world.

It looks great! Just like what a few people said, the nose shouldn't be higher than the bridge of his muzzle. If anything, it should be slightly lower, and his chin a little less prominent. Otherwise, it is fantastic!

Thanks! Nearly all the wolf mannikins I've seen have slightly dishes noses like that. It could easily be straightened more, but I'll have to look at reference photos to see what's up with the muzzle shape. I do like the slightly dished look.

Really depend son the wolf. There is a lot of natural variation and I've seen several wolves with slightly dishes noses. Wolf chins are also quite robust. [link]

He looks really good! Love his eyes, I think you got his eye expression really well. Only thing I notice is that his muzzle seems a bit dished, the nose is higher than the bridge of the muzzle. I love how the base came out! It does have a cool, wintery feeling. :>

Thank you! Nearly every wolf mannikin I've seen has the slightly dished nose like that. It could easily be altered to be straighter, but I like the look.

=SageKorppi linked to a pic of a wolf with a dished nose. I had actually never noticed that before. I had seen dogs with dished faces, but not wolves. Guess I've been looking at too many hyenas as of late. :>

With that addressed, I don't really see any critiques. I think he looks really nice!

Thanks! Yeah, I need to look into more reference photos and see about the nose. But for whatever reason nearly all of the wolf mannikins have that slightly dished nose look to them. I wonder why.

Huh, that is odd! Good to know about the variations, though! As I said, I had never noticed it before. Makes sense, though, as canines have such hugely varying genetics (which is what lead to dogs being so varied). :>

It's actually 3 different wolves :) An arctic and two "standard" greys.

There's lots of variation in grey wolves, especially since they are so widespread with many subspecies recognized.

Can't wait to see your mask!

I just went and looked up a bunch of wolf pics for a mask blank I'm sculpting, and hadn't noticed anything like the dished face. Very good to see this variation! Also wonder if I've been looking at too many hyenas as of late. ;D
