I've been continuing my work on this: [link]
9. The epoxy areas are primed with a mixture of gesso and acrylic paint. Painting around the eyes is tricky and you usually have to come in later and gently scrape off any extra paint that got on them.
10. Front view of primed areas. I tried to make the nose mostly equine with a hint of canine influence.
11. The fur is applied! I just use hot glue for this, it's the quickest and easiest. The long fur on the muzzle is trimmed down a little. I try to keep any seams in the fur to a minimum, and put necessary seams in places where they won't be noticed or where there's already a natural impression in the anatomy.
12. The head has been covered with fur and trimming continues on the muzzle, around the eyes, and on the ears. Messy!
13. Fur on the head is finished and the neck is covered.
14. All the main areas of fur have been applied and the sculpture is ready for airbrushing. The fur inside the ears is not going to be painted, so will be glued in after airbrushing.
15. The eyes are masked off with tape so they don't get painted and the fur is airbrushed so it looks more natural. My cat also likes to keep me company.
16. Feather crest is added. This photo is from the sculpture studio at school. My airbrush quit on me after painting half the sculpture, so the other half is still unpainted. The feathers also need a bit of airbrush shading. After that's finished, I still need to glue more fur inside the ears, paint more detail on the epoxy areas, and mount the head on a wooden wall plaque. Then it will be finished! My airbrush refuses to work no matter how much I clean it and take it apart and put it back together, so I'm kinda freaking out.
